Tom, groundworker (illustrative review)
Asked which lime grade for a damp cottage wall. Got a straight answer and a request for a photo, not a sales pitch.
Claire, restoring her own house (illustrative review)
The bolster set is the one I should have bought first. The hickory handle is kinder on the hands.

Questions

What does delivery cost?
Stone goes on a pallet by kerbside delivery and tools and mortar go by courier. Delivery is free over £250 on the mainland. Anything under that is quoted at checkout by weight.
Will the driver bring it round the back?
No. Kerbside means kerbside, and a pallet of setts is not a two-person lift. Have somewhere to put it before it arrives.
Can I send something back?
Tools and unopened mortar have sixty days. Cut stone is made to your measurements, so it is not returnable.
Which lime grade do I need?
NHL 2 for soft handmade brick and cob, NHL 3.5 for most solid stone walling, NHL 5 where it stays wet. If you are unsure, send a photograph.
How are setts priced?
By the square metre as laid. Measure the area you are covering and order that figure, rather than working it out in packs.

Natural stone, lime mortar and hand tools

Brackmoor Stoneworks sells natural stone, lime mortar and the hand tools that go with them, to the trade and to people doing the work themselves. The range is kept short on purpose. Every product is listed in the unit the job is measured in: setts by the square metre as laid, mortar by the 25kg bag, tools by the set. Delivery terms sit on every product page, so the cost of getting a pallet to the kerb is known before checkout rather than after it.

Riven sandstone setts

The setts are sawn on six sides and riven on the face, which gives a flat bed to lay on and a textured top to walk on. They come in two sizes, 100mm and 140mm. Sandstone is a natural material, so colour and texture change from one sett to the next and from one batch to another. Where you can, order for the whole area in one go so the stone on the pallet comes from the same batch.

Natural hydraulic lime mortar

The mortar is natural hydraulic lime, pre-mixed with a washed sharp sand and sold in 25kg bags in three grades. NHL 2 is the softest, for soft handmade brick and cob. NHL 3.5 suits most solid stone walling and repointing. NHL 5 is for work that stays wet. On a wall built before cement, lime is the right repair because it stays softer and more breathable than the stone around it, so the mortar takes the movement instead of the stone.

Bolsters and lump hammers

The bolster and lump hammer set is three bolsters and a 3lb lump hammer, forged and hardened rather than cast, with a choice of hickory or fibreglass handle. It is the set for splitting and dressing stone by hand and for cutting brick and block on site. Tools can be returned within sixty days, so there is time to put the set to work before deciding.
